HUNTINGTON, WV - The Herd Racing Foundation has been able to make a donation to Legacy Powerboat Ministry in the amount of $550, thanks to the 55 participants in last fall's first annual Herd Racing Foundation 5K Off-Road Race.
"We are fortunate that we were able to have enough corporate sponsorship for our event that we were able to take $10 from the registration fee of each runner and donate it to Legacy Ministry," says Jeff Webb, president of the Herd Racing Foundation. "The folks at Legacy provide a great service to the boat racing teams and their families at the race events each weekend and we feel blessed to be able to help in a small way to keep their ministry going in 2012."
Webb said 55 runners raced in the foundation's 5K race conducted on the Saturday after Thanksgiving at the YMCA Kennedy Center near Huntington. The race was won by siblings, Marc and Alexis Parnell from Erie, PA, who posted the top male and female finishing times.
Herd Racing President Dana Tomes says the services that Laurie, Jan and Lauris Vidal of Legacy Ministry provide to boat racers, their teams, and families is appreciated.
"After my crash at Elgin in 2011, Jan and Lauris were at the hospital with me for the first few hours after the crash, offered to call home for me and were just there to support and pray for my recovery," Tomes said. "Having someone talking to God and requesting healing and safety for me was very comforting. The Legacy team prays with and for every driver before they race every weekend, asking for their safety while competing. That is a service we want to make sure continues for as long as power boat racing exists."
Webb said there is a good chance that the Herd Racing Foundation will try to make it's Legacy benefit run an annual event. "It was a huge effort to put on the event, but the results were well worth it," Webb said. "I am sure it is something that the foundation members will want to consider again for 2012."
Tomes said Legacy has been part of power boat racing by providing chapel services during race weekends for 16 consecutive seasons. Anyone wishing to support Legacy Ministry with a tax-deductable donation can mail to Legacy Ministry, P.O. Box 373, Evinston, FL 32633 or contact the Vidal family at 352-591-2001.
